Rhizome is a free educational resource and a growing, youth-led movement. Students, clubs, schools, families, and neighbors use it to learn native ecosystem science, certify real gardens, and build projects that fit their own community.
Why Rhizome
A rhizome spreads underground, connecting plants and rebuilding ecosystems invisibly. One shoot looks like one plant but below the surface it is joined to everything around it.
That is the model for this movement. Every garden is a node. Every club is a hub. Every student who acts extends the network further.
There is a striking parallel in the fungal world. Mycorrhizal networks connect plant roots across entire forests the same way. Invisible, connected, essential to everything above ground.
Underground. Connected. Unstoppable. That is how ecosystems actually work, and how this movement intends to grow.
Inspired by EcoRestoration Alliance
The EcoRestoration Alliance (ERA) is a key scientific contributor to Rhizome. Many of our lessons and certifications are built with ERA's teachings in mind. Rhizome is a youth-facing movement; ERA is the science that keeps it credible.

The ERA mark appears on every Learn and Plant certificate a member earns — a credential grounded in real ecological standards.
ERA mission
Rhizome's goal is to support ERA's work to restore the planet's life-support systems.
Rhizome is an independent youth platform built in collaboration with the EcoRestoration Alliance. Our curriculum draws on ERA's scientific framework and is currently under review by ERA advisors. The ERA co-certification mark reflects this active partnership and will be formally confirmed as the review process concludes.
